another 2002 project Robusta

This is a Juniperus Robusta destined to be worked on in 2002.
It needs alot more work though. Work on the pad and branches. If you see something let me know.
Thanks
Jhill

Re: another 2002 project Robusta

Hi Jay,

It took me a long time to find out what it was that I felt was wrong about the bottom branches of your tree. It seemed there were to many. I removed the second branch from the bottom on the left, and I think this looks better. I bend the branch above it down to fill in the gap and removed the branch above it. I also bend the two bottom branches on the right. I bend the top to the left to create a left-right movement in the trunk from the bottom to the apex. Lastely I filled in the foliage pads a bit, and put the tree in a Tokoname pot. I am a newbie so I am very interested in your opinion about this virtual.

regards, René

Hi Rene,
For being a newbie you couldn't tell it. Looks great!! That is what I had in mind. I wired the branches last year keeping the ones you see now until I decide which ones to remove. You and Walters virts helped out alot. I need to learn how to do virtuals. What program do you guys use?? I just went out and got paint shop pro.Is this a good imaging software??
Thanks alot for the virtuals.

Hi jay,

Glad you like it ! I am using Paint Shop Pro 7 for all my virtuals. Especially the clone brush and the color replacer are very handy. It's great fun, and also very good practice.
I like your tree a lot. I think it can become a very nice bonsai !

good luck, René

Re: another 2002 project Robusta

René,
how can one explain why I like the shorter version better? Why do I like most cats and only some dogs?
Seriously: a general principle that I follow in bonsai design is to make the tree as short and as compact as possible. With the exception of literati type trees this works to make the bonsai more impressive. The trunk stays the same, when everything else becomes shorter. So the trunk becomes RELATIVLY thicker and the bonsai thus more powerful.
best regards
Walter Pall

PS: paint shop is fine. It is not the software that makes these virtuals. The vast majority of programs on the market can do teh basic things required.

Walter,

Thanks, I get your point. Just learning all the time. I agree that the program doesn't make the virtual, but he tools that come with a program make it easier to do some tricks. Like for instance the clone brush I mentioned.

regards, René

Re: another 2002 project Robusta

Good morning Rene and Walter,
Thanks so much for taking the time to do a virtual of this tree. I to Walter like the shorter version. It helps make the trunk look bigger then it really is and not so tall and lanky. As for the virtuals I am lucky enough to post pics let alone do virtuals but I killed alot of trees too until I learned more and more about taking care of them. In time I will learn how to do virtuals This to me is an excellent tool in styling Bonsai.
have a great day
Jhill

Re: another 2002 project Robusta

JHill and Walter,

I've been looking and looking at Walter's design, and I agree that the shorter tree is more powerfull, but I also think that the shorter branches make the foliage look like a "blob" (is that a correct description ??) The pads are almost round, and I must say I don't like that very much. I'd like your opnions on this.

rgds René
