Anatomy Of A Andy Jackson Tree
This is a procumbens that I picked up to grow out. I bought the stock with the intention of putting it in a grow box to thicken. I bought them due to the potential in the trunk and foliage. I bought two of these trees to grow out. This tree just had better potential then the other. The other will go into a box for a few years.

While I knew that this tree had better potential it may not be apparent to some. The tree had a trunk line that was an 'L' shape, and the huge branch on the lower right was larger than the first branch should be. The rule is that the first branch should be one third the size of the trunk at the largest point. This branch was almost half as large. It is marked in blue. The trunk line is in magenta.

Bringing out the beauty in this puppy was going to take some work. I knew that I had some hours of time to do in the wiring to make the branches the way I wanted them.
I strted by pruning out the large branch. I left a stub for jin. After careful consideration, I felt that leaving jin stubs does not look natural with out shari. There has to be a reason to leave dead wood. Not just because it looks cool. I felt that if I sharied the portion under the dead jin, it would give the effect that the branch had been torn off and down due to a large boulder or lightning strike.

I did all the deadwood effects before wiring the tree. Ever try to carve dead wood around wire? Forget it.
The shari was cut down the front of the trunk and brought to a point near the base. I did not go all the way, and left a live portion near the base so as to not totally kill the roots there. It will prevent rot from getting started too.

The bottom two branches did not fit my design plan, so I decided to jin them, but leave them intact for coolness.

I started to wire the tree. The design will take a lot of wire to make the branches form to the vision I have for the tree. The trunk is wired with 10 gauge copper. The rest is done with aluminum.

The trunk is wired all the way to the tip of the tree. This is needed for what will come next. I needed to gain strength for the next operation, as this would make or break(pun intended) the tree.
At this point all the main branches have been wired and it is time for the coup de gras.

To achieve my design goal, it would mean that I have to bend the top third of the tree back on itself 180 degrees. The whole top needs to bend over to the right. I held my breath and grabbed some wood and gave a mighty heave.
The thing went over and the wire held. No cracks in the bark and it never made a sound. This was way to easy. something is going to go wrong. Murphy has never been this kind to me.

Aw.. Miller time. Now the hard part is done. The rest will be cake. I start to fan out the branches and start to do some of the adjustments that begin to make the tree take shape. This is the fun part, the artistic part. This is the part that makes bonsai artists' heart skip a little faster.

I spend a little time building the trees apex. To me this is the next toughest part on the tree. I think first branch is hardest and then apex. I feel these two attributes set the style for the tree. They have to be in perfect harmony to work together. If one is wrong the whole tree looks unbalanced.
