Amature Tanuki

Haha..
After asking a hundred questions on this forum and researching, I decided to use my very boring needle juniper to form a tanuki.

Found myself a piece of deadwood, then carved it a bit with a chisel.
I don't have all the equiptment that most pros have so I used resources to the best of what I had.

It was pain staking but here are the results!

I dug a trench to fit the front part of the trunk...and nailed the tree to the deadwood.

If u'r trying this for the 1st time, make sure u take the tree out of the pot 1st...and then when u do...make sure u drill a hole in the tree 1st...man...nailing a nail to a tree wasn't all that easy when it's got a round trunk...

I also nearly got bitten by a red back spider...so check the pot...

oh and one important thing..wear gloves...

anyway. so I nailed the tree, twisted the top part to the dead wood and added two more nails there.

Here is a close up of the nail.

The tree is about 1.7 cm in diametre.

I have read and been told that ferrous material and conifers don't mix...

I hope they are brass nails

Nice job though

Greggles,

Couple things: Brass is toxic to junipers and this is not a needle juniper. Rather, it is a San Jose juniper.

You might consider replacing the brass nails with aluminum screws. Best of luck!

Andy, You've made me doubt my own mind now

Just to make sure it wasn't a figment of my imagination, I did a little checking up...

I have a book in front of me which says to use solid brass screws, never steel or plated screws. The plant being demonstrated on is a blaauws juniper...

can we have a second (third?) opinion here

Regards,

Chris.

Aaaagh! Chris, you're rightl; my mistake! I remembered exactly the opposite. I found my reference and it says as much as yours does. Greg, I am very sorry for this mistake. You've done right if you used brass. I apologoze for my brainfart.

I'm going to and read all of my bonsai library over again...

Kind regards,

Chris thanks for getting us back to whats right... and Andy...thanks for being a better person and admitting a mistake, something anyone can do.

We have here an example of what Andy has said a few times in various places... be on guard of what you learn on the net... For the most part we do get it right here but sometimes a 'brainfart' or just some poor judgement comes through. Not all who give the incorrect answers are as up front in trying to check their facts... Plus... it was better than 5 hours that the incorrect info sat out there.

Conclusion, check and double check...be sure of your info and if you see something that looks incorrect...question it and check..... a lesson learned by all? Lets hope so!!!
