I remember hearing a statement to that effect, I think, by Brent Walston, in one of the excellent articles on his website. |

I have airlayered Kamagata, Kiyo Hime, Shishigashira, and a couple of others that escape me at the moment, precisely to get them on their own roots (no graft). They all have done pretty well. I can't say I've done the definitive experiment - that would be 20 cultivars on their own roots, side-by-side with 20 grafted, and see which grew best. So far I can only conclude that the cultivars will do OK on their own.

Id like to see a nice demo like this on air layer a branch in the air, or at least here some tips because i have the hardest time getting a nice round ball of peat moss to stay on the branch and wrap it with plastic too. I need like 4 hands or something!

I have found that if you secure the botton of the bag first, (I use zip-loc freezer bags)--then fill it with your choice of propogation medium (I use spagnum moss), it is much easier than growing additional limbs. ![]()

I think it is best to use some sort of rooting hormone unless it is a vigorous rooting species like willow or ficus.
