OK, I went both ways.
Air layers on the hardwood:
(Boy, this was precision work, but nothing like doing it at 01:00 AM!
And don't say anything about the planting angle, I accidentaly fliped the pot sending little bits of leca and everything else in the soil all across my living room wooden floor and tilting the tree. I'll have to wait for the next repot to straighten it.)

And softwood cuttings:
Let's see what comes of it...

PS: I've been water jet washing the aerial roots too. I think they look much better now!

Nah! It probably took me around one hour plus 30 minutes of cleaning and tidy-up.

Yes! The bag around the moss ball is clear plastic but I usually wrap it after in microwave aluminium paper (shiny side in, dull side out, I don't know why, I remember reading something about this) so that the moss ball doesn't get any light or heat.
Due to the size of the layers I'll probably need a serynge and needle to water it, but it can be done none the less...

First time I see this word . If you mean "Having streaks, marks, or patches of a different color or colors;" yes it is.
Here's a closer picture:

Yes, variegated means having a tree with more than one colour on it's leaves.I like what you have done with the aluminium wrap. I think that it is with the shiny side in because you want to :

a: use the darker side to attract light thus heat
b: use the shinyer side to reflect the heat from the inside of the tree. This should aid the roots in forming, providing a warm environment

I've replaced the layers picture to include objects that give a clue of the tree and layer size.

This is the smallest leaf I've ever seen on any tree whatsoever. I've measure the bigger leaves to be about 1 cm long with medium sized ones at about 7 mm.

With this leaf size it's really easier to make the tree look good.

ROTFL on that toothbrush. Do you know about

www.crashbonsai.com ?

The smallest leaves i have ever seen are on my Portulacaria afra and on boxwoods. But they are thicker than serissa's leaves......

Hey there

I took this picture over the christmas break, it's an accasia living in a vally in the Drakensberg Mountains, where I used to go to school. I think this is the most perfect umbrella tree to grow naturally. It actually a protected specimen at the moment. I hope you enjoy this picture.

It am 5'10" and I could even wrap my arms around this tree the last time I saw it. It's branches span several meters, and although it does not hold a record as the largest branch spanning tree, it truly is one of a kind.

Thumbs up

I've seen thousands of acacias as they're an endemic species here in Portugal but I've never seen anything like this.
Exceptional!!!
Thanks for what I remember as the best 1st post since I'm in this forum.
You are most welcome!

forgot to mention...

Apart from being a protected specimen, the tree has never been pruned or artificially shaped in any way. From what I remember, it's about 60 years old, and has been a landmark for the valley for quite some time now. I used to see it almost everyday from 1993-96, and I always marvelled at it, it's one of the reasons I chose bonsai as a hobby.

about the tree: It takes a full grown (large) man to wrap his arms around the trunk, most people that have tried, have not been able to get their hands to touch on the other side!! It's that fat. The photo kind of shows that there are 2 main branches that appear right at the top of the trunk, and they are responsible for the rest of the other branches, and the weight of the tree. The branches span out about 7 or so meters, that's roughly 20 feet!!!

Just thought you might like to know.
