aerial roots and trunk development

This is a followup to a thread i started about one year ago here http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthread.php?t=8350 .

I did some trimming and wiring today after letting the tree grow pretty much untrimmed for a year.Lots of little shoots to chose from and i think the "roots"/trunk are starting to meld well.

the first picture is a series from a year ago as the roots were starting to form
the second is today.

what do y'all think ?is it working?..thanks

andy

I don't see it but it may be the two dimensions of photography that are fooling me. From my perspective it looks like a hula dancer with a grass skirt only without the curves.

So Andy, let me get this right. You're essentially starting an airlayer on the ficus to get the aerial roots started....then let them fuse with the trunk? Good idea.

Sauce,

I pretty much agree...for now.I'm hoping the roots fuse and then take on the coloration of the trunk. We'll see.

Brian,

It wasn't my original plan~L~..I was just doing a regular airlayer but the thing put out so many roots i thought I'd see what happened if i trained them down and around the trunk.

I would try to encourage a few aerial roots from a bit higher on the trunk, or at least cover the layer point with foliage. The line is a bit artificial, yes?

Chris,

yes it is..there is a large scar just above and to the right that i might be able to cover up in the process of encouraging roots from a little higher up also..thanks

Just a thought, but when you start to work on your second set of roots, perhaps you could do it with a number of smaller cuts that are spaced along different intervals on the trunk. If this would work, it would avoid the single large scar that one cut develops and might appear more natural.

How deep did you go into the trunk?
Was it likened to using a vegetable peeler or did you go deeper?
I like the effect.

humidity

Why didn't you just put it in a extremely warm humid environment that would stimulate the aerial roots ? at least that way it would look more realistic.

Just a thought.... I get them on my figs all the time but just end up cutting them off constantly.
