Personally I really like this tree the way it is now. I would resist any further shortening of it to conform to what many consider a traditional Japanese Maple profile though that in itself is not wrong or inappropriate even in this case. The truth as I see it is that the tree is beautiful in its current configuration and I see no real reason or flaw to justify changing its unique character.

I'm with Vance on this one; this is a lovely tree.

However, you really need to take the time to remove the weeds from that pot though. I've had similar infestations and lost good trees.

dear Vance and Jeremy and all, thankyou, i,m quite happy with how this one is going overall, i,d like it to gradually widen at the current height. come spring i will get rid of those weeds for good and get my first good look at that nebari

I personally would feel bad to cut off any part of that wonderful trunk that you have, so I would concentrate on creating a rounder profile and remove the lowest branch. The image you have is too trinagular and rigid for such a wonderful maple. Excellent material. bonsaimeister
