advise please on acer palmatum please

hello, everyone, i,d appreciate advise on this mountain maple please, IMHO it has one of the best trunks i,ve had the opportunity of purchasing but i have a few concerns on how to progress with it best. it is currently about 20 inches high but i,m not convinced by the upper trunk? time scale is not a big concern as i,d like to get this one right! many thanks in advance, andrew

Apart from the lower branches appearing to be growing upwards(I'm sure theyre not) it looks a fine specimen to me!

heyAndrew; Very nice maple. If it were mine I would shorten it a little, find a nice pot and let it ramify.

I agree with Heymikey, but I would also smooth off the bump on the right from the lowest chop, and remove the lowest branch on the left.

Andrew, another magnificent tree you have their. Mike's virtual is right on the money. You might even consider air-layering that little mini off the top but I wouldn't want to damage the main tree doing that procedure.

Again, magnificent tree.

LARRY, thanks for the kind words, HEY MIKEY, i was thinking along your lines, your supporting advise has given me the confidence to chop, i think the original upper trunk was getting contrived, lacked taper and was forcing this maple in to a pine. BRIAN, again thanks for the supporting advise, the bump at the first chop is totally healed, i think i,ll have to open up a 2-3 inch wound to get rid of the bump, but i did say time no problem and i,d like to get this one right. so i,ll go down that route. TOM, i,ll post more pics as soon as i can, it IS a very busy tree, my main other concern is the cluster of branches at around half height, maybe you can help with these when you see the new photos. DAVID, thanks again for the supporting advise and for your compliments on my gallery trees, highly appreciated!

hi, i,ve done a little work in shortening the trunk a bit as in hey mikeys virtual and rounding of the first chop point as advised also, now i,ve had the chance to add some more photos to hopefully show a bit more of whats going on. i,ve not removed the lowest left branch as yet as i feel it,ll do know harm to stay for a while and improve taper a touch. my next biggest concern is in the cluster of branches (whorl) at around half height. which should i take out? i,ve got a close up of this area. many thanks in advance of all and any help, cheers andrew
