Walter,
I like the way you have the pictures setup with the progressions when you click on the thumbnail. The fist page seems a little crowded and busy for my liking though. Thanks for the great images Adam |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME
|
Walter, this is an improvement in your Gallery's design. I enjoy the way the pictures allow you to see the tree now and in former time frame views.
Some of the thumbnail pictures are not as clear and sharp as I would like, but when the full size picture opens it is as one would expect... a Walter Pall Tree! Jay

Walter, I have a comment on the page load time
At this time of night, it took about 30 seconds to load the homepage. I have a cable modem and most all pages on the net load within a few seconds, some load times are a flash. I don't think it is all image size, it may be some server issues. However there are a lot of images. There are some 125+ images of about 12K-16K making perhaps 1.7 megs of download. This is far too much for a homepage if it is to be reached by dial-up users. The curious thing is that the individual images are rather large at 12-16K each, but they are also heavily artifacted (fuzzy and lacking in detail). at 12-16K they should be sharp as tacks. They don't need to be, though. You could easily compress the thumbnails to 2-3K each to improve things, and at least get the load size down to 300K. Start with good quality images before resizing and then apply very slight sharpening and a lot of jpeg compression (30%?) Benchmarking.... Just as a test, I ran http://walter-pall.de through NetMechanic.com, load time was listed at 264.27 seconds or roughly 4.4 minutes for dial up services. That's a loooong time. Also it may wind up costing you in bandwidth unless you have a dedicated server. For example if you site has maybe 10Gig monthly limits, while that sounds like a lot, it's only maybe 5000 views of that homepage. By comparison, bonsaiTALK.com is a "heavy" page due to the graphics and number of links and article headlines, probably too heavy, but the load time is 55 seconds by modem. I would try to get the homepage of your site loading in less than 60 seconds. The content and quality on the subsequent pages will make that worth waiting for. Regards, Matt

I agree with Matt, due to being on a dial up. The page was not even finished loading when I jumped off. Also the page is far too wide for my browser. I have to use the scroll tool at the bottom to see all the trees and that is distracting. The images do make up for someof this though.
Nice going Walter! Bonsai-al

Well worth the wait. The homepage itself was a fast load for me. The gallery, well it did take a while, but the images, and history were well worth the visit.

Walter,
I agree with Al that the webpage is much too wide. Most people use a resolution of 1024x768 and your gallery doesn't fit when using that resolution. That also goes for the pictures when you click a thumbnail. Maybe you could try to make them fit in a 1024x768 screen. I would try to make the thumbnail pictures a bit sharper because they are very fuzzy right now. The trees more than make up for this though. Fantastic ! regards, René |
