Looks like a great tree, good find. I'll be tagging along for advice on this one also.

Camay,

Here's what's I'd do.

This is not necessarily what you want to hear, because it is a realtively long-range plan and will yield several small trees instead of one large impressive tree.

But here it is anyway.

Let me explain the colors.

The green arrow points to the graft line. While this graft isn't so bad, It's certainly not a pretty feature. More to the point, the graft is high and the trunk below it lacks interest.

Let's get rid of it.

I propose that you layer at the yellow lines. The primary purpose is to get a single, very nice tree out of the main trunk above the graft. Layer there just above the graft line, probably at a slight angle as shown, so that the new trunk emerges at an angle as for an informal upright.

I'd also put layers at the other lines shown in yellow. You won't need those branches in the final design, and shishigashira is a nice cultivar to have around.

The red lines show places that I'd chop. Above them are long straight segments that have little interest. You won't need those in the final design either.

The blue arrow shows what I would use as the new leader.

This is a relatively long-term project, but I think you'd get a really nice small tree and a couple of interesting pieces of material out of the effort. Alternatively, you may wish to just work with the whole tree as is. Either way, good luck!

With my best regards,
Carl

Carl,

Actually I like your idea. If I layer at the yellow line, Ill only chop the trunk at next spring, So the base can reproduce buds next season ?

Also, Can I do multiple Air layer on the tree. I would do both yellow lines and maybe a few long straight segments in order to do a group planting ?

Camay,

The base is almost certainly just plain seedling Acer palmatum stock. So while it will produce buds next season, they wouldn't be shishigashira.

There should be no problem with doing a few simultaneous layers on the tree.

Cheers,
Carl
