"I had always assumed that it was the high fired one"

It looks unfired to me. The high fired stuff looks alot like red popcorn and is impossible to crush between your fingers. Pick up a piece of yours and see if you can crush a piece between your thumb and finger. The high fired ak comes in bags with red lines on it, at least the imported stuff here in the States does.

Update

Hi all,

Just a few updated pictures of the maple this spring. The colours were a lot better a few days ago, but unfortunately I didn't have a camera available.

Vern, my apologies for the delay in responding to your post. Yes this tree is entirely on its own rootstock and and the branches aren't thread grafts either. As the tree ages and "woods up" the green limbs will develop bark.

I actually cut a hell of a lot off of this tree the day before. The top has been cut to enduce back budding to develop more branching near the apex, whereas the lower limbs have been left unchecked to allow them to attain girth. Not a great deal to do on this tree this year, other than keep the upper growth restricted and feeding and water. I'll be twiddling my thumbs for the most part.

All the best,

Aaron

Gorgeous trunk A. As soon as the limbs catch up - what a tree!

Thanks guys for the comments. Yup, growth on the lower limbs is definitely the order of the day, so its going to get uglier before it gets prettier lol.

All the best,

Aaron
