Acer Palmatum "Deshojo" suggestions/comments

Hi all,

The other night I was successful in winning an auction on Ebay.co.uk for this Acer Palmatum "Deshojo". It was imported to the UK from Japan, and is on its own root stock with a 9cm diameter trunk and 16" tall including the pot.

Unfortunately its not with me at present, I should be taking receipt in about 2 weeks, so I can't take any more pictures of it at the moment. I would in the meantime appreciate any styling suggestions, comments or ideas regarding it.

Also, would anyone like to hazzard a guess as to its age, as I don't know? My kiyohime is just under half this trunk width and is around 25 years old.

Many thanks,

Aaron

Nice find. That's a burly maple, especially for A.p. deshojo (which is a good thing in many ways, but presents some interesting challenges as well).

If it were my tree, I'd probably wait until late next winter, clean up the wounds, and let it grow vigorously to better heal the chop scars. Once that's done, you can start selecting buds and developing the primary branching.

Best regards,
Carl

Thanks Carl,

Yeah it is quite a monster. The seller said that out of the 6 he'd imported this year, this was the "pick of the litter", and he'd never seen a Deshojo with such a heavy trunk as this.

When you say next winter, do you mean winter 2005 or 2006?

All the best,

Aaron

Hard to make any comments about styling with all the danged leaves in the way. Except, obviously, that your lower trunk development is pretty much done...lol. But since you're in no hurry, post again this fall after leaf drop.

Probably around February 2006 - but that's assuming that you're not going to repot the tree, etc., etc.

Yup I wasn't planning on repotting it. Thanks for the heads up Carl.

All the best,

Aaron,

There's a very nice, extremely detailed article in Bonsai Today #39 about developing a maple from a similar position as yours (trunk finished, time to heal scars and set primary branching).

http://www.stonelantern.com/bonsaitoday1995.html#

If you can get a hold of this issue by hook or by crook, it'd serve you well.

(Your tree looks like a better piece of material than the one in the article.)

Hi Carl,

Many thanks for letting me know about this article. I'll try getting hold of a copy of this issue if I can, as I would really like some specific literature on it. Your help is appreciated!

Tucker, you know it made sense not to bid on it lol . I too would love to see it out of leaf also, just to get a real good look at the line of the tree overall, and to get a picture of how best to start the development on it.

Thanks again guys!

All the best,

Aaron
