I'd start by putting it back in the ground for about 5 years.

i agree with Arnie, fatten that guy up, i don't know about five years though. amur maples are fast growers, mine just sent out 20 pairs of leaves at the top and 10 sets lower down on the tree at the lowest. mine started the year with a pathetic 1/4 inch trunk and it has tripled that in one season in a pot (1 gallon though)! mine is still sending out leaves and it got down to 30 F a few nights ago. you should definitely watch out that it doesn't get a lot of wind in spring when leaves are coming out, it can deform them pretty good. also, watch out for leaf spot especially in summer for some reason. other than that, it is one of the easiest trees to take care of, and that is from a person with a ficus.

Acer ginnala is Amur maple or Acer tartaricum sp ginnala. Either way, this type of maple is often used as a substitute to the Trident maple in colder climate area. It is alot more cold resistant. I have seen a few nice tree made with this type of Acer.

G'day Jerry,

Here we go again, but first thanks for the offer, but no thanks, like me for instance, once again I am faced with this really wierd obsession with the thickened trunk, must be that I'm from an ancient past/era, and am not at all willing to take my trees along that path. Have one or two books [early Japanese/English printings from way back] and there is not one single entry regarding this really strange notion that thick is beautiful, true I do have a few trees that have thick trunks, but that is how they came to me. I downloaded a pic of a beautiful small forest [with very similar trunks] of A.ginnalas, where the emphasis seems to be on the striking foliage and that to my eye is akin to that of one of my other favourites, Premna japonica, with the fresh green and mature Summer colouring.

So be it....ozzerbon

You know I'm amazed that you get so much pleasure from these young trees....good for you - your obviously a very passionate man.

But personally a sapling in a pot doesn't formulate bonsai for me, the suggestion of putting it back in the ground and creating some taper and a butress will result in an outline that mimicks a tree of great age....is that not the idea of bonsai?

(....I'm just getting under my desk ready for the incoming!!! )

G'day Arnie,

No sweat, an opinion is just that, whether or no age has anything to do with bonsai, bothers me not. [and I'm not so sure that it does, judging by what I see in certain Japanese sites][also a good reference to Historical drawings from China and Japan]

I have been toying with bonsai since 1985-6, on and off and it's only now that since I've retired [70yrs] that I can spend all my time enjoying my few trees [over 200].

I have knocked antlers with quite a few bucks in this bonsai world of ours, and endeavour to break almost every rule in the book, if only to keep myself active.

If I had garden space [only a 2sq meter balcony at my disposal at present][plus every available surface indoors] I doubt that I'd plant trees in the ground to bring them on or whatever. The modern [or contemporary, if you like] approach of thickened trunks, like those monstrous SUMO efforts, do nothing for me, and that is where I stand.

But it is good to have the input.

getting pleasure from your hobby, whether conformist or radical is key...and you certainly seem to enjoy it!!

No one should ever quash different thinking particularly in a creative arena.

Again, not my bag....but if it flicks your switch then good luck to you.
