"Acacia style" Benjamina
Jerry Meislik has graciously provided insight regarding initial design of this tree, and the path I have chosen is an african acacia style. I have hopes of creating a credible design in that regard with time.

G'day Mistermoyogi,
NEAT work sport, a bit of a Ficus fan myself, a tad envious ;-)). Never thought of doing that to a Ficus, sure will take your cue, looking forwards to seeing your tree's progress. Nigel

I have always like this form of tree very much. This ficus is well on it's way to becoming a really beautiful bonsai.
That said, you might consider growing the canopy outward more, so that it more closely resembles the tree in the first photo, this will bring the canopy into a more harmonious balance with the trunk girth. Excelent work so far, and please keep us posted on this trees progress.

Having looked at your pic again today, one thing jumped out at me, there are no, what I think of 'as supporting branches', as is atypical of the African style, does this not concern you?

Yes, Oz, it does at this point. I have realized it as well. I can see two alternatives...continue to let the tree grow out a this height and develop a supporting branch structure which would result in a significantly taller tree, or trunk chop a good bit lower and begin again. I am undecided at this point.
