360 VIEW: Tree Critique (tree no. 3)

This classic Moyogi styled Shimpaku is small. Only 5 inches tall with a 1/2 inch trunk. This tree is about 8 years old but was styled for the first time this spring. It has recieved its most recent pruneing this past week and some addtional wire was added. All the wire will be removed in the fall.

This tree suffers in the side views and I will be eager to hear comments about this and probable fixes. Something other than time, which I already know will fix most anything.

Now I am disturbed. I know that Bates always advocates having a scalene triangle profile, but I have been trying to get my tree to look like a scalene from all 360 views and I am not sure but I think this is impossible.

Could you please let me know how to make triangular profiles from all angles? I called over to UC Berkeley and they put me in touch with a geophysicist who claimed that there is a three D shape called a tessarhomboid that would meet the requirement. I asked him to send me a picture but he claimed it was a mathematical construct that had negative surface areas and it couldn't be modeled in the physical world.

He did give me a real cool pot to use but he said it doesn't drain very well.

Tree,

Apparently there are metaphysical aspects of this 3D approach that most of us can't understand.

Al,

This is a nice little tree. I like it very much. Why do you want to screw around with it?

It illustrates, I think, the silliness of this "3D" argument. First, the medium in which we're discussing 3d is 2d. How can we offer advice on how to make a tree more three dimensional when we have no 3d image of it and can only offer suggestions based on the "unreality" of photos.

Secondly, if we offer advice on how to improve the side views, it would tend to severely alter the front and back. Are you willing to settle on ruining those two? The "front" is very nice and I bet you spent some time thinking this design out (not to mention money on the tree itself.)

Third, are you looking for suggestions on how to make the side views more "visually pleasing" or looking to make them on a par with the "front" of this tree?

Tessarhomboidally yours ,
Rockm

Al,

The first pic is the obvious front. Trunk line visible, pleasing triangular shape, good ratios, an overall nice attempt at classical design.

Two pics from side are obviously such. They both show an abrupt change in trunk direction that would be a fatally flawed trunk (pigeon breasted) if viewed with Frontal guidelines.

The last pic is an obvious back with foliage covering the trunk line, destroying the visual movement of the trunk line. I suspect it also covers a major chop mark.

The tree, not to mention the pot, would not be a good candidate for a 360* display (and you know it). It would however, be a pleasing addition to any bonsai bench, including mine, for someone who is looking for a traditional front view display.

John
