3 Japanese Larches
Hello All,
This is my first post here on BonsaiTalk, so go easy on me!!! Anyhow, here are 3 Japanese Larches that may have some potensai in the near future. 2 out of the 3 were dug out of a field about a year ago and the 3rd one was just dug this past winter. My plan is to start working on the 1st two in the month or so and wait for a bit on the 3rd. Although, I may wire the branches down now. Of the larger 2 you will see there are some dead branches in them that I was leaving for possible jin's in the future I haven't really studied the first 2 trees that much but thats what I plan to do over the next month.Feel free to give me suggestions both good and bad, offer advice, do virtuals and comment. Here is the first one... Thanks, Jason |

Here is the 2nd Larch. I think this one is a little better than the first. The top on this one has died, I think from past trunk chops and direct summer sun.

Ok, here is the 3rd one. This little guy will be styled more in the formal upright style. I will wire the branches here in the next few weeks. It is very healthy and responded rather nicley to life in a pot!!
Once again, please feel free to give me ideas, thoughts and suggestions. Thanks, Jason |

You have some nice trees there. I personally think that the first tree has the best potential at the moment. It has nice trunk movement and looks like the trunk tapers nicely. The second tree has potential but will require more work in rebuilding taper and the top of the tree. With the third tree you should consider possibly getting your hands on similar straight trunks, with varying trunk thicknesses, and creating a group.

Jason - You have some nice material tp play with. Like DavidN, I like the first larch best for the trunk movement and taper. Even though I do not offer virtuals, others may find it difficult to provide them because your background and some of your camera angles do not lend themselves easily to virtuals. -Candy Last edited by Candy_J_Shirey : 5-Jun-2005 at 09:27 PM. |

I thank you David N and Candy for the advice and quick responses!!
I never thought about adding the 3 rd one to a group plantinig, that is a very interesting idea!! I will consider it and keep my eye's open for some more JL. I do appologize for the pic quality. I went into the menu on my camera and changed a few things on accident and sense then have yet to get back to normal Thanks again, Jason |

OK, I'll do my best with the third one first, I'd go for a Straight-Line style where the tree has fallen over flat to the ground and the branches then grow up to be a line of trees, of course you'll need to do some research on how to go about trying your hand at this style, but I reckon it's well worth the try.
The Japanese name of the style is IKADABUKI. I'm trying my hand at a similar style, Sinuous NETSUNAGARI. If I can find later today, I'll have a go at the other two, but first glance sure looks like they need to be pruned. Nigel

These are indeed good material!!! Having said that I can only caution about startin to work on them too soon (it has only been a year ,I believe you said on the first two). I collect quite a lot of these and on any material that is gleaned from the wild I wait a least three years to be on the safe side. I only say this from the experience of having lost trees due to being over-anxious.Take your time and in that extra two years I bet you will have a better idea where the (inner )tree is in each one. Good luck!!
Regards, Jonathan

Ozzerbon, Are you suggesting a Raft style with the 3rd tree? If so, I don't think this tree really suits itself to that style. I do think if shortened a bit it would make a nice formal upright in the future. Once I wire it up I will post it again and see what you think.
Jonathan, thank you for the advice, I do appreciate it. I had a chance to lift both trees from the pots this past winter to inspect the roots. Everything looked awesome and the trees are in great health, putting on tons of new growth. I don't think styling will be that dangerous considering the health of the trees. And the trees were dug about year and a half ago. I will atleast go in and clean out the mojority of the dead stuff leaving a few stubs for potentail jins. Again, I thank you both for your comments and advice. Thanks, Jason
