Zen And Bonsai?

I think Zen Gardens are cool just like bonsai. I have seen Bonsai in Zen gardens but I have never seen Zen gardens in Bonsai. I know Zen gardens are not just the sand in a box but can be very extensive and take up a lot of land and very pretty. But can these be mixed Zen in Bonsai? If any one has seen this or knows of a web site that has these let me know.

Thanx
Opie

You might find it interesting to look at saikei or tray landscape design as well as the suiban (water tray) display of suiseki with sand and gravel. I am sure you will them very closely tied to Zen Gardens, and about as close as you might come to a zen garden in a pot.

Beyond this, there are certainly zen practices at work in the design of bonsai. Minimalism, the idea that form follows function, and certain other design and philosophical ideas are ingrained in the art.

It's often said that bonsai along with other ancient practices like the tea ceremony, gardening, meditation, brush painting and so forth were brought from China through Korea to Japan by Buddhist monks, so they have similar history.

If you look at the arrangement of elements in a formal bonsai display, I am sure you will see similarities with garden design. The enjoyment of bonsai with suiseki and in particular the appreciation of bunjin (or literati styled trees) has a historic position in the tea ceremony.

Regards,

Matt
