Zelkova Serrata
Well, I just went to the local nursery on my lunch hour. I bought a Tree priced for 40 dollars for 10 dollars. what a deal. It was in amongst some really tall trees of the same king, Zelkova. I looked at the guy and said "This thing is beat to hell! What kind of discount can I get." $$$$$10.00 What a deal. CHACHING!!!
Leaves look a lot like Elms. It was a lot shorter, had grass and weeds growing in it, but looks healthy. I'll post pics later. Does anyone know a lot about these trees: characteristics, growth habits, backbudding, ramification, nebari, etc.? Knowledge would be greatly appreciated. |

Everything you know about C. elms is the same, except that Zelkova is thought to be very slightly cold hardier. I am presuming you know about elms, but if not come back and say so.

Zelkova leaves seem more delicate... my Chinese elm leaves are slightly thicker and tougher. The Zelkovas are more papery. And they extend on a more delicate twig, sort of. Otherwise, they seem much the same.

Dude, Pics are very important when talking about Zelkovas, as there is quite some confusion regarding Zelkovas and the Ulmus family. I'll wait 'till you post. Regards, Nigel

Zelkova are closely related to elms and are just as vigorous. The zelkova name is often used in bonsai imporation to skirt heavier regulations placed on Chinese elm. That means sometimes Chinese elm is identified as Zelkova of some wierd sort.
However, if the tree is a landscape specimen, it most likely is a zelkova, as they are cultivated as replacements for elm species. There are, apparently a couple of cultivars used in bonsai. One has new shoots that are red the other has green. The red-shooted cultivar is a bit better at being bonsaied from what my nursery friends tell me. The green isn't bad, but the red is better.... |

Plant it in the ground, you won't believe how fast it will grow. It will shoot up to 6' tall this year, and the leaves will enlarge to 2" long. Sounds bad, doesn't it? But it will regain it's health, and the trunk will get thicker. After a few years it can be chopped way back, and you can go from there.

Well, I'm actually quite satisfied with the thickness of the trunk. Let's say that I've already done that, skip a couple of years, aaaaaaaannnnnndddddddd, what would you do now?
