Hi Everyone... :-)
I have a Chinese Elm which has a problem......? It's leafs are turning yellow, and are falling off the branches when I tuch them....! The tree is generating new shots, and leaflets. In addition it's branches are growing rapidly...! - During the winter, the Elm did not shed its leafs, so is this a normal process of changing the leafs...? And has it mixed-up the seasons....? or is it something else...? -Could it be lack of Nitrogene or some other elements...? -Or has it been getting too much water....? I have been watering it no more than every 2 nd day...! - I have been giving it fertilizer every 2 weeks...(POKON..Bonsai fertilizer) I have attatched 3 pictures: One of the tree, one of the crown (showing some yellow leafs) and one comparison between a normal leaf and a yellow one. I'm looking forward to any suggestions...! |

Tyr,
It's hard to say.In general your tree looks healthy enough. It could just be the natural replacement of old leaves with new ones.If your tree didn't go dormant and lose all the leaves in winter,it will drop the old leaves over a longer period of time. Looking at the green leaf in your third picture,it looks slightly mottled..perhaps you have spider mites. You would want to check for those and treat if necessary. The best thing for you to do is to ask someone who has experience in your area and with elms.A up close personal inspection is always superior to a guess while looking at photos on the internet. andy |

I have quite a few of these trees and it's quite normal to see a few yellow leaves (which fall off ) throughout the growing season.
I agree with Andy - your tree looks perfectly healthy to me. Make sure it gets some time outside in the summer...they like it. Jerry Amsterdam

We had a pretty wet, cool spring early on this year. During that time I had some yellowing and leaf drop on my elms. A little black spot, too, I think.
So, I have cut back on the water a bit since and put them in more sun. Seemed to do the trick. That said, not sure it this applies to your situation. I agree with taking it to someone close by for an opinion.

Thanks for all your answers.....! I forgot to tell you that the Elm is kept outside from Apr - Oct (0 to 32 Deg C), and in a shed during the winter from Nov - Feb (0 to -5 Deg C), and inside from Feb - Apr, so it should have gone dorment.....? but still did not drop any leafs....! Had a look for any mits....but saw none....! I guess I will try to keep it a bitt less wet for a period, and see what happens...!

Funny animals your Chinese Elm. I left mine outside over winter and none of them dropped their leaves... even when the snow came in March. Then one of them dropped all his leaves and played dead for 4 months and now has all his leaves again. Another one just carried on and grew more leaves. I have about 10 Cork Bark Chinese elms in the ground and they all lost their leaves before winter. So dormancy and Chinese Elms is a bit of a hit and miss affair - I wouldn't worry about it when your tree looks healthy. I wouldn't change your watering just because of a few yellow leaves - I find this perfectly normal. Jerry
