The Yankee, Two Aussies, And A European Bloke.
Gidday Guys and Gals,
THE YANKEE, TWO AUSSIES, AND A EUROPEAN BLOKE. Here are four of my blokes, three with rather large foliage [which pleases me], also displaying some of my pleasures, thin twisted trunks and fairly deep containers. THE YANKEE: NYSSA SYLVATICA, started April 26 2006. Semi-cascade [HAN-KENGAI].Height, 14cm [5 ½“]. Deciduous. Inconspicuous flowers are borne in May or June, followed by 5" bluish black fruit in Autumn. This is a tree with eye-catching features throughout much of the year. It has a neat, pyramidal form that shows well in all seasons. The leaves are dark glossy green in the summer and turn to orange and scarlet in the fall. The alligator hide-like bark is another striking characteristic. Sun to partial shade; prefers moist, well drained soil; provide shelter from wind, tolerates wet soil and clay. [Very fast growing, collected as a single stemmed trunk, so by what I’ve seen this year am expecting miracles next year.] TWO AUSSIES: BRACHYCHITON ACERIFOLIUM, started April 12 2004. Literati [BUNJIN-GI]. Height, 51.5cm [20 ¼“]. A tall deciduous tree with large, deeply lobed, dense, deep-green acer-like foliage. The velvety leaves are very soft and fragile. Masses of small scarlet bell shaped flowers in summer when the tree is mostly bare of foliage. Brilliant red. Bottle begins to form under ground when 10cm high. The trunk may excrete sap during wet weather. They put down tap roots that may intertwine and some surface feeder roots. Canopy can be heavily pruned to form compact, smaller shape. Grows very fast indoors. [This particular specimen has gone semi-evergreen.] [grown indoors] BRACHYCHITON RUPESTRIS, started July 8 2006. Five tree [GOHON-YOSE]. Height, 31.5cm [12 ½“]. Drought deciduous caudiciform tree. Great variations in trunk-form. The fast growing won't get the "wide shoulders". It has yellow flowers and brown nuts with 10-30 seeds in, wrapped in small needles! [Has just been totally pruned down and wired for the first time] [grown indoors.] AND THE EUROPEAN BLOKE. [A recently introduced, graceful, weeping, form of deciduous european larch. Very hardy and suitable for most soils.] LARIX DECIDUA - “Poulii”, started February 14 2001. Literati [BUNJIN-GI]. Height, 58.5cm [23“]. Deciduous. The bright green leaves are about the first to come out in Spring. The first two cones set, Summer 2003. Twenty three cones developed and set, Summer 2004. Found, in a sadly neglected state, in a garden nursery in Amsterdam, which since then that nursery has failed. [Recently repotted and rewired, a very hardy tree indeed.] Hope some of you like what you view….? Regards, Nigel

Hi Ozzer,
You are obviously keen on bunjin as indeed I am. Bunjin always looks an easy style but I think it is deceptively difficult to get right. You've done a good job here. Keep us posted.
