wound sealant

Hey how much sealant do you need to use. I recently cut a large lower branch off my elm and sealed it but then it went very green and snot-like. Did i use too much?

What sort of sealant is it?

I use some Japanese brand (so I've got no idea what it's called). Little tub and it's like grey firm putty.

Generally I only put a small layer on, starting with moist fingers (to avoid sticking), and smear it out to the edge of the wound.

It seams to be moisture resistant and goes hard if anything after being out for a while.

Its a japanese one too so cant read anything on it but mines in a tube not a tub and reminds me of slugs, yuk. I took the sealant off the elm today just because it was so unsightly and put just a small layer on instead.

This is the stuff I've been using. Pretty happy with it too. A little bit really goes quite a long way and it doesn't generally appear unsightly on the tree (being grey and all).

The example here is on my practice elm (cut was a bit flat I know). This wound is not even a full season on.
