Wormeries, their Compost & Fertiliser !
Hi All,
I've just received one of these as a present. The Original Wormery I set it up last night.... so will be a few weeks before it becomes established. Has anyone experience with using these .... and is the compost of any use within a Bonsai soil mix ? How about the liquid fertiliser that is produced ![]() All part of our re-cycling drive ! Regards, Ian. |

Worm castings will clog drainage quickly in a bonsai pot. Avoid them.

However, worm casting TEA is an excellent mild fertilizer. And you can then mix the castings in your garden.
It sounds like the "liquid" that you drain from the bottom can be used on your bonsai, just like the tea. To make the tea, put scoops of worm castings into a bucket, and cover to twice the height with water. Cover the bucket and let sit in the warm sun for a few days. Drain off the liquid and fertilize with it. Then turn the sludge that is left into your garden soil. What a fun toy, Ian! Joanie

Ah, Chris, I would never tease about tea.
And you do get some warm days eventually, right? In August maybe?Cindy Read makes a worm casting tea, she also throws in chicken manure and a little steer manure too. And her bonsai are thriving. I've made worm casting tea once, then mixed the sludge into the growing bed. It smelled a whole lot better than that nasty fish emulsion stuff. THAT was AWFUL! Joanie
