Hmmm, I don't know people. 10000 years old for such a scrawny little tree? And the age was counted in Florida? I don't know if we can trust any kind of counting coming out of Florida!

Apparently
Apparently it could be that old (10000 yrs). The articles says:
"The visible portion of the spruce was comparatively new, but analysis of four "generations" of remains - cones and wood - found underneath its crown showed its root system had been growing for 9,550 years, Umeaa University said." Besides, my mom says, (former nurse) the older one gets the less weight one should be carrying around. |

I wonder if the Quaking Aspens are older... they send up suckers indefinitely although at a much greater scale than this spruce (largest organism in the world, I think).
Lots of people think the Aspen root system approaches 80 000 years of age but they haven't been able to date it conlusively... This spruce dating, on the other hand, is pretty convincing. Seems very unlikely that another spruce dropped genetically identical cones right at the base of this guy 10 000 years ago... Still, the Bristlecones stand as the oldest complete tree in the world (root system + original trunk). Last edited by AMKhalid : 20-Apr-2008 at 02:23 AM. |
