As an art director my first impression was that they must be manipulated images.....I'm totally gobsmacked. Great web design too, I love the nav on the original site.

As Andy is pointing out, they got that way from YEARS of very good and very patient work by people with exceptional talent and technical skills. No manipulation of these images. These trees have been grown in Japan (pictures credited to Boon) and have been in training for decades.
