Wooly Aphids

Looks like I have wooly aphids on one of my mugos. Besides a bit of soap and a strong spray of water, any other suggestions?

wooly aphids...are the ones in the ground right?

if so...im trying to remember how i dealt with these. the first thing i did was buy some poison. that killed the ones on the surface. i sprayed that stuff on it 3 times a week for three weeks. sadly, i have never seen the same stuff here in the states, and customs wouldnt let me send it to myself here either.

second, if i remember right, i repotted. im not telling you to repot, but when i repotted, i made sure that my soil was of the type that would drain fast. i did this with a cherry tree in the spring right after blossoming. at first i was using 2 parts black loam and one part akadama. i changed it to one part black loam, one part sand, and one part akadama.

there is probably someone else here who can give better advice....

Wooly aphids are the fuzzy white bugs. They are covered by a protective layer of wax secretions, and according to a quick research online, insecticidal soaps are not very effective due to the waxy covering. According to what I have read, a systemic insecticide works best.

While I have seen these critters on my landscape pines, I have never had the misfortune to have them on my bonsai. I am sure that my luck won't hold out, though, since I am surrounded by MANY white pines. I guess I will have to prepeare for an eventual infestation....

Regards,
John

nj,
I had aphids on a fukien and those little b******s reeked havoc! Daily showers for weeks, insectidal soap every day, nothing worked. I finally got ahold of a systemic called disyston. I'm not even sure if you can get it anymore but from my experience it's systemic all the way. I would check all your other trees and if they are clear then move them away from the mugos. Good luck.
