A Wooden Slab Project

One neighbor of mine on my street was having a tree brought down today. While they were almost finish I ask one of the worker to cut me a 1 inch thick slab of wood. This is what I got. It is 18inch in diameter. Unfortunatly I dont know what type of tree it was and the nighbor was not there. Since it's pale wood I say it could be maple. Maybe I should ask the neighbor.

The picture make look like the wood is curving in but the cut is nearly straight and the slab is flat like a table. Welll almost

My plan is to sand and vernish this slab to get a nice display stand of some sort.

Any toughts on how to process to acomplish this ?

Cool

hey Camay123; I suggest You draw a pencil line across the middle of the slab and accurately measure the diameter. Then you let the slab dry SLOWLY to minimize shrinkage cracks and warping. Remeasure the diameter occasionally, you will see it shrink. When the shrinkage virtually stops or at least 3-6 months passes, then your can make the slab flat, smooth, (fill any cracks that appear) and apply finish to both sides. The bark may fall off since it does not shrink at the same rate as the wood. Regards, heyMikey!!
