Wisteria Airlayering
hi. I have airlayered a wisteria a few months ago and today i haven't found any long roots, only 2 short ones.I've figured that it was because i didn't make the cuts clean and because the soil mix was too water retentive. So i recut a ring in the bark and changed the soil mix.The growing season is ending in september, but i will keep my wisteria in a greenhouse where it will have 20 C all the time. This means that it will skip dormancy for a year. i brushed the cut with rooting hormone and i have also added some in the nearby soil, just to make sure, overall i have added one small rooting hormone recipient, envelope however you want to call it.I was wondering if too many hormones can actually inhibit the root formation. Second question: can i water once a week with willow water to aid in the formation of roots
Thanx

I've had good results with this plant. You have to be patient. Let it root all growing season, don't separate until bud break following spring. 100 percent sucess. Never had to add hormone but just give it time and stop looking at it, Ha!

Yes, of course you can use too much rooting hormone. It's not the ideal cutting medium. Read the package and it will tell you to shake off the excess. Is the top of the plant still living? You might still be able to complete a layer - wisteria is among the easiest plant to layer. I think I have separated large layers in just a few months, and that was being conservative. Good luck!
Regards, Matt

I am curious about the idea of leaving the air layer on until next spring. I currently removed two air layers that had been on my wisteria for 2 months (didn't take due to not enough drainage) and reapplied a new one. I am hoping to remove the new one before the temperature drops this winter because I fear that the roots would sustain too much damage if left to face the extreme winters of New England. What say you?
Regards, Mark

Cre8,
Not strickly wisteria, but I've left air layers on some conifers for two years. Some are just slow to root. If you look close, you'll see that Bonsainut and I are in zone 9-10. Rarely a night of freeze in these parts. I suspect you'd need some protections from freezing in your area. Good luck.

the top foliage is still green, but it has lost some leaves, about 30. It seems to have stopped for now.let's hope it survives

D3rutat:
You might try to cover the airlayer with Bubble wrap for winter protection, or mulch up to the air layer and place a small box or plastic container around the air layer and fill with styrofoam peanuts. Just use the Persiano Pick in the air layer (as well as the main soil) for watrering needs.
