Beautiful! That gives me hope for mine! I have one in the ground that's sprouting, but none of my potted ones are showing any signs of life yet!!

I'm affraid I lost my wisteria over winter. It's actually still alive in one section but the bark split vertically all the way up the trunk leaving a large section of deadwood. Not exactly the design I had in mind. I think it was exposed to too much sun causing alot of freeze thaw cycles and finally splitting the bark.

That seems to happen quite often to large trunks. Was yours big? Sometimes the smaller head of foliage doesn't seem adequate to sustain the entire trunk.

I have a big one that did that and I mean BIG - probably 24 inches across.

Regards,

Matt

Ron (et al)

Is there truth to the claim that stressing your wisteria will cause it to flower? Also, that age has alot to do with this as well?

I have floribunda and chinensis, of which both are yet to flower. (going on three years now)

Paul

They seem to need to become a little potbound before they will flower. It does take a decade or more from seed.

There is some discussion on this topic in Another thread with a link to a relevant article.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks Ron for the inspiration and Matt for the info links and PDBBonsai for info!

I have two Wisteria potensia: one is being trained as an informal upright not blooming in bonsai soil, and one as a cascade in the nursery pot I bought it in(rootbound) but it's blooming this year for first time three flowers so far.

The cascade has nice taper and a pretty good base.I let it grow last year and I'm thinking of doing the same this year to try and get a thicker trunk.

Should I do this? or Should I prune it after blooming to stimulate more budding? I did take pictures but they're still in the camera and I need help uploading from the hubby ...

Just trying to learn something new everyday...

Thanks
Lesley

Hi Ron,

I would be really interested too in seeing the whole tree...

Paul- as far as I know wisterias always need a few years before they start flowering whether you have them as bonsai or as outdoor. If they are not grafted they also flower much less.

Here is a picture of the whole tree. Nothing much , just a play thing.
I'll try to answer all the other questions in order.
