Wiring Time?
Just went back to "Bonsai Today" Issue 78 and the major article on wiring. It advises doing wiring starting the beginning of October for most species, both conifers and deciduous.
Anybody agree or disagree? I have alot of material now, a fair amount of it ready for initial styling. Somehow I had imagined I should wait for Spring to start on it. This will be much better because Spring is so busy with potting, repotting and transplanting. I'm wondering also whether it would be OK to get Walter's advice on my best trees, even though non of them are bonsai yet, just good material ready for initial styling. Well, I guess all I risk if not is a scolding; I haven't heard of anybody being taken out in the parking lot and shot yet for sending an inappropriate photo in for Walter's advice. I haven't tried to wire anything for 5 years, since I left California. Hope it's like riding a bike: once learned, never forgotten. Fred |

Not a practice that I believe in. Depending on the specie of tree and how I feed them I can wire almost any time of the year. |

Ron, I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Do you mean that there are species in your collection that are coming into their particular wiring season at many different times of the year or that most species can be wired at any time? Also, would you mind elaborating on the effect of feeding? Also, have you found any species that should NOT be wired at the end of Summer?

Actually I mean that I can wire at any time of the year.. Any specie. As to the feeding of a wired tree I do think that I have covered this more than once on this forum. If needed I guess I could do it again. Basically all one has to do is understand is the NKP numbers on fertilizers to know what to do. It is basic stuff. I am sure that you know the physics of the process but if you wish I can go over it again |

Didn't mean to trouble you, Ron. I'll figure it out.
Thanks, Fred |

Hi Ron,
I am very new to bonsai so if you could, please explain about feeding trees that are wired. I have 2 wired now, a juniper and a ficus. I have been reading everything I can but I am taking so much in, I can't retain it it all. Then I read it again. Thanks Virginia |

Yes Virginia there is a ............ Sorry could not help myself. Won't do it again. It will take a lot of words to get my point across about fertilizing. Please believe that I am not making excuses. I just have a full plate right now. That nasty bit of a storm Gaston blew through here on Sunday. I am trying to do a bit of clean up from that. Now I find out that something called Francis might just fly by here. Got to get ready for that just in case. As soon as I can I will write something out. Might take a couple of days but I promise I will get it done. Just keep an eye on this thread. |

Hi Ron,
That Santa Claus gave me a chuckle. I haven't heard that in a while... lol...I forgot that you are located in hurricane country. My daughter is in Myrtle Beach this week and has me worried. I haven't read anywhere that feeding should be different when you wire a tree and that is why I posted. When you have time will be great and I will do more reading and see if I can find information about that. Keep safe. Thanks Virginia |

Fall is a good time to wire. You could wire at other times, but that would depend on you HAVING TIME to wire. Fall is a good time to wire because growth has slowed, and so have the various tasks that need to be accomplished. Deciduous trees have dropped leaves and you don't have fragile buds to worry about knocking loose.
Regards, Matt
