I know is not so important of how you wire the mesh just that is tie up firmly.

Do any one know how should I tie it so it wont move??

I saw a video a month ago, that somebody post in the forum but I couldn't find it.

i bend some thin wire like the pic here and place it through the mesh and drainage holes on the pot. then bend the wire underneath the pot to hold in place.

There are a few considerations when wiring mesh into the pot. The "butterfly" type tie is okay and works just fine but takes longer. It's easier just to bend a threefold wire and then bend down the ends to go through the mesh. Holds just as well and takes no time at all If you measure your wire against the hole, leaving about 1/4 to 1/2 inch on either side of the hole, that will be the middle of your "Z" that your are going to use. For clarity, I have shown a space between the lengths, but you will want to use your pliers to clamp them tight together.

Place the ends through your mesh as you normally would, making certain that:
  • you use 2mm or 2.5mm wire so you get plenty of support.
  • the ends are as far apart as the hole will let them: in other words, tight to the sides of the hole and directly across from each other. This will keep the mesh from sliding around
  • the two ends are perpendicular to the force exerted by any tie wires you will have coming through the hole. Once again this makes sure nothing moves and no gaps open up to allow your soil to drain through.
  • if your mesh has a curve to it, place it so it bows up. Having the edges up allows soil to get under it and makes a less effective job.
  • you flatten the ends as tightly as you can under the pot, pulling with pliers if necessary. If you have used heavy enough wire, it will not pull through the hole.
If you follow these considerations, you will never experience problems with mesh moving or not being secure.

I've never had a screen fall out. I think the key is using the correct size wire (1.5mm is the smallest I'd use and 2.0 is perfect) and not making it so tight that the edges of the screen lift up. Use pliers and you won't have any trouble whether you make staples, butterflies or whatnot

Regards,

Matt

Thanks,

I was thinking about how the wire is wasted on clips for the mesh, How about a super glue, epoxy or something, that hold the mesh for life on the pot?
I don't think it will move with glue.
Does affect the tree or the soil?

Is there really cause to be concerned about 4 inches of wire? I guess you could reuse wire for that purpose.

The screen gets pretty yucky after awhile and needs replacement. It will get clogged with roots growing through it, algae and muck. It will also become brittle after a couple of years and tears pretty easily. If you're using metal it would start to rust out by then.

Regards,

Matt

I use dry wall tape...should be able to find at any hardware store...

Simply cut the size you need and "stick" it to the inside of the pot.

It works for me...for over five years.

The only problem I've had, is that the "sticky" dries out before the roll of tape gets used up.
