Winterizing Young prebonsai trees
I recently bought a prebonsai dawn redwood that stands about 12-15 inches tall and a prebonsai amur maple which is about 8 inches tall. I have had them in my possession for about 2 weeks on the maple and 2 days on the redwood. This is my first winter as a bonsai enthusiast and not sure on the proper care for these trees. Any info would be awesome. Thanks.

deciduous trees
I am in central NJ as well and am looking for some suitable deciduous trees. All I can find are 10 ft and above with no lower brances. Curious if you gud these or bought them at a nursery.
Thanks. Ron |

Hi Franco, Your Dawn Redwood is hardy down to Zone 5a so you should have no trouble at all overwintering this tree in Zone 7. The Amur Maple (AKA Siberian Maple) is hardy down to Zone 2a (-50f) - now thats cold!!. All the best, Aaron

I purchased them at at online nurseries. Just do a search for what you want in google and something will come up. It is the easiest way I feel to buy trees, as long as you get the one in the picture and not some look alike.

They will do better outside with shelter around them. Mulch up the pots and make a wind break around them. You can also cover them with straw. The only problem doing it this way is if you have rabbits. In that case build a cage around them with chicken wire. It is also best if they are out of the sun. The idea is not to keep them warm the idea is to keep them from warming up in late winter and early spring. You want them to go dormant and stay that way untill the really cold weather is over.

They are not planted in any pots. They are planted in the groud underneath a line of 15 foot tall peach trees. I figured this would be a good place b/c they are somewhat protected by the larger trees.

ten foot and above decidious are the best. i just found a ten foot japanese maple with a two inch trunk at this nursery that is closing and i offered the guy twenty and he took it! just do the trunk chop in the spring. they should shoot out everywhere. in four years or so you should have a bood bonsai. |
