Winter willow cutting?
I did a search on willow cuttings...but I need an answer to a very specific question. Some of you have experience with willow's and I was wondering what my success rate would be if I were to take a willow cutting this late in the year. The cutting would be about 8-10 inches across at the base. Any one with enogh experience to answer my question would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, I live in Central Florida. That might help formulate an answer.

The largest I've rooted was about 3-4 inches across. 8-10 inches shouldn't be much of a problem though. I think that if you stick the cutting into some good earth/soil/soiless mix and leave it you'll be greeted with plenty of fragile roots next spring and a pot full by year's end. Just keep it (the soil) moist until you see that roots are forming.
If you mulch it in this winter you'll afford yourself a little extra root-growing time for this season. Wayne F. |

Thanks for the tip. I'm probably going to go collect the cutting today. Wish me luck!

More willow stuff
Anybody ever try corkscrew willow? My granfather gave us a few cuttings from the tree in his yard a few years ago, and we have a full sized tree growing in our backyard. I have about 15 cuttings going now, just propped up in a bucket of water. There are literally gobs of bright pink roots bursting out of the base, right up to the water line... But has anybody seen or taken corkscrew willows to a fairly decent point as far as bonsai are concerned?

Something that might help a bit.
Try watering the cuttings with half a vitamin B1 tablet in warm water to start with, then every so often, 2 weeks or so. This vitamin plays a part in root development so should speed the way to strong roots. hope it helps. |

Rooting willow is very easy. You can even root it in water! Because the willow contains a lot of natural rooting hormone, they even use that water to help other cuttings root.
But I wouldn't count on just one cutting, even if the odds were very good. Try 6-12 and choose the best prospects. Regards, Matt
