Why Does Elm A Grown In S Shape ?

Why do I see often elm grown with a trunk in S shape.

Ok, on the galleries of the forum there is not many S shape elm, but on eBay, at one of the local Bonsai Store, that's all they got in terms of elm.

Two example :

Elms don't grow in S shapes on their own. Someone trained it that way, probably around a stake $

The reason you don't see trees in that shape in the gallery is that it isn't very artistic in an untapering form. It's quick and fast to grow.

Regards,

Matt

I understand that. I dont like an S shape tree, but that's mostly waht I see. I often visit a bonsai store near me and thats all they have. As soon as I see a non S shape elm, I think ill buy it.

Those "S" shaped elms are mass produced mallsai. Most of them come from China in large shipments for consumer level mallsai and garden center sales. New england and Brussel's even sell them!

The state of Bonsai is going down hill as far as some of the plants trying to be sold these days.
I think a lot of it has to do with the import restrictions from Japan.

We know better....don't we?

Am I the only one that finds comments like this somewhat snobby? If u like them, so what? And I have seen some I wouldn't mind owning one bit. Including on huge old elm at NE bonsai trained in S curves, that is wellll outside of my price range. lol. To each there own I say.

Personally I dont consider any of these comments to be snobby. As a bonsai novice, I find it to be enlightening. Ill admit when I first saw thes s shaped trees I thoutht they looked cool. Then I saw some of the awsome trees on this site. Im just glad someone pointed out that most of these trees have no taper, cause I almost bought one.

I kinda agree a bit on the snobby comments. But that's art. When you think in terms of art criteria, you always frown on some simple things because they lack of art criteria.

Now I got a simple question. I speak french everyday. I understand pretty much anything in english butg sometimes some word I dont know. What is "taper" I see here in there ? I cant seem to find a good translation for it .

Camay123,

taper in bonsai, refers to being large at one end [the roots] small at the other [the apex]

/ \ this is taper...

|| this is no taper...

Behr

Strider, if you really feel that discriminating between art and kitsch is snobbery, I think perhaps you'd best adjourn to gardenweb:
http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/bonsai/

You'll find (a few, vocal) kindred spirits there.
