Wow, then all the research and study that says differently must be wrong? Got any good examples of even numbered forests that wouldn't be improved with one more tree? Will Last edited by Will_Heath : 29-Nov-2005 at 11:01 AM. |

(emphasis mine) 5+3= ? Basically, all the research, and all your "essay" proves is that odd does in fact make nice forests (or has the potential to.) You've in no way disproved that even-treed forests are repugnant, stale, or not believable.

There is more to what I said than what you have quoted. Nothing new there. And as to posting pictures of a forest I will be doing an 8 tree forest as soon as the weather warms up a bit. That is an even number and yes it is less than nine ;o) I promise I will post it here for any comments you and others might want to make. You will just have to be a bit patient. |

Sometimes a discussion does get a bit heated but that doesn't mean it is a bad discussion. Just heated.
I can see your point on one of my posts and will delete it. I should however be able to express my opinions on a subject. Politeness does however count in that expression. I admit that sometimes I fall down in that area. Last edited by Ian_Homer : 29-Nov-2005 at 11:59 AM. |

Again, a shame that certain members can not act as adults and discuss the topic without getting into this situation.
I shall now close this thread.... and possibly delete several posts. Regards, Ian. |

OK,
After considerable editing, this thread is open, if only because I am interested in seeing Ron's 8 tree planting in time. I have cleaned the recent mess up, but rest assured I do not plan to make a habit of spending such time, and then see it all go astray again. Please remember, the majority of members can LEARN things by these threads, but do not need to be subjected to all the bickering. It is up to the posters here to control tempers, or no-one gains and the thread is closed for good. Ian. |

Here is a very nice bonsai that seems to have a even number of trees.( if I didn't miss count) It looks like it works very well to me,does this bonsai really need to have an odd number and if so why?

redpine, The "rule" we are discussing here states that if the forest contains less than 10 trees then they should have an odd number of trees. Anything over 10 trees does not "group" well in our minds. In fact, most books and articles mention this. Will |

Wes, when you get above ten or so, the odd/even doesn't matter. It is when the numbers are smaller, because our brains are very quick and they can "count" in just an instant after we see the overall composition. Our brains divide things into sets, or pairs, because we are wired to seek symmetry in our world. Finding the symmetry, we want it to "balance" into two equal halves. This doesn't leave any tension for us to keep our interest.
When there are an odd number of trees, it keeps us engaged because of the need to seek symmetry. We are intrigued, we are kept off balance, and our eye and mind move over and through the composition rather than finishing with it. Just as with the movement of the trunk, going out of balance and back into balance... just as with the offset of branches..... and the scalene triangle, with uneven sides. These are all ways that we "play" with our brains and perceptions, using our innate quest for symmetry to keep us interested. Just my opinion, though. From talking to a lot of artists, trying to pin down why something works and why something else doesn't. Joanie |
