Question Why Do Leaves Turn Colour?

Does someone know why leaves turn colour red, orange, yellow and all sorts of colours?

I understand that the auxins and the cala-somethings move up and down the tree...but what causes the leaf to turn colour?

Here are a couple bonsaiTALK Links on the subject.

Now your assignment is to read them and come back and tell us why leaves change color!

ohhhh...I get it!!!

man..that's sooo interesting!!

ok..in a sentence...here we go!

Leaves turn colour because the leaves stop producing food. (hmm..need more sentences...) There is a chemical in the leaf called chlorophyll. the chlorophyll breaks down and reveals the rest of the chemicals (which are not green).

So techinically...when I see leaves changing colours, that means those leaves have stopped producing and the "plant food" is going downwards?

Much as I hate to see my interest in bonsai converging upon my work life, some of you might be interested in reading about a recent scientific hypothesis for autumn color. To understand the argument, you may find this background to be useful.

Best regards,
Carl

ohhh..that's a really interesting hypothesis!!

Yea! that means..if it's true, I can build a shade room out of red or yellow shade material and the aphids will avoid it! hahaha
