Why didnt my olive take off?

I reckon it must have been diseased stock, as these i believe are normally easy and fast to grow- but mine just didnt pick up, even tho i watered it correctly and put it outside when the weather picked up, but no new shoots came and it just looks really sick.

Also my sageretia, after being repotted, is dying, it really objected to the root prune but the rootball was just a real mass.

Well, i bought it in march and repotted it in good compost, pruned it to 2 stems and it just sat there doing nothing.

These are pics taken when it was 'healthy.'

How long has it been since you've seen any growth. i repotted mine in about march. It's not much larger than yours. It took a couple months to respond. Do you have yours in the sun?

Both the olive and the sageretia should be repotted when it is already pretty warm outside. It is a mistake to repot them in March, especially in your zone.

I repotted both my olives and sageretia in April, and I live in California. For you, that would be equivalent with late May. You can only start thinking about repotting an olive when you see the new leaves coming out. The roots of the olive regenerate during the hottest part of the season, which is late June, July and August. If you rootprune it early, the injured roots cannot regenerate and the tree can die.

When & if it dies maybe get in and have a look at the roots. I don't know what you mean by good compost but I don't use any "compost" as in well-decayed organic matter (which is what it means) at all on my olives. They thrive in well drained conditions and like heat.

Regards,

Matt

I would agree with Matt that "good" and "compost" do not belong in the same sentence, unless you are talking about tomatoes. Trees in posts need to be in a free draining, mostly inorganic soil (unless you're whats his name from Michigan.)

I think maybe you placed the olive too close to that birch tree you have and the birch sucked all the life out of it because the birch was the alfa male.

Compost for me is a generic word meaning the material in the pot. In this case, as with all my plants, its a well drained mix i put together myself with plenty of grit/perlite etc.
