Why Bonsai?

I have a conjecture:

The importance of bonsai lies not so much in the development of small trees as in the development of the minds of those who care for them.

Why Bonsai

The question that you pose brings this thought to mind.
I have often said. "Bonsai slowed my life and thinking down to the point where God could catch me".

Rip and Fred,
I totally agree with you both. I think there is nothing wrong w/ having perfect trees, however the calm that I feel while working on my trees is often more important to me than whether the tree is "perfect" according to the rules. I believe that bonsai should transcend the physical side and lead to an inner peace and harmony with the spiritual and natural realm.
Kind Regards,
Jonathan

Finding that Zen place

I will never forget a comment that I heard in one of my beginner classes a few years ago. "Boy - when you are used to making split second decisions all day - waiting years for this tree to be a bonsai is a welcome change!"

Having said that - I think I can speak for a number of us "Type A-ers" in commenting that bonsai is teaching me patience - I just wish it would happen faster!
