Hi,

It sounds as if importing Japanese bonsai into the USA is a difficult and expenseive business. From what I understand, the white bark of the beech turns white after a good number of years. But I don't know how many years. I think the nearest equivalant that we have in terms of bark colour in the UK, is the silver birch. They have light coloured bark, but not to the same degree of whiteness as the Japanese beeches.

Heres a couple of photos of my new purchase. I bought it not for the tree it is now, but for the tree it can become with a bit of care and a lot of luck.

Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Did that tree come from Scotland by chance?

All the best,

Aaron

Hi Aaron,

Yes it did, I thought some UK based members would recognise it. Not a bargain, in fact its by far the most expensive tree I've ever bought. I bought it because I felt it has potential to be a substantial tree in a resonable amount of time. As I said, I didn't buy it for the tree it is now, but rather for the tree it can become.

I sincerely hope that you're not going to tell me you sold it him for 25 quid!!!

Best wishes
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

Yeah I recognised the background and lighting lol. Japanese White Beech are never cheap, even the seeds. The vendor is a bit on the expensive side in my opinion though. He has some nice stock now and again, although its priced at a premium for sure - even the more mediocre stuff. His prices a few years back were a bit more reasonable.

All the best,

Aaron

Hi,

Yes he is expensive, but as long as I can keep it alive, it will be an investment. There seems to be a shortage of good bonsai on ebay this year. I forget the name, but there use to be a seller from Derbyshire who had good quality bonsai, they seem to have stopped trading. So far this year, ebay has been very poor on the bonsai front.

Best wishes
Stephen
