Where is everyone???
I recently found this site and to me it is, IMHO, the best thing going. But it seems that it is not used as much as it should be. Where is everyone??
John

Re: Where is everyone???
John... people are busy! I too feel this is a wonderful site. I am still a novice and need help far more than advise that I may be able to give. Remember, many of the members are from the West coast, Europe and other time zones. They answer when they are available. This site is still young, as it grows there will be heavier traffic.............Jay

Re: Where is everyone???
John, I thought a bit more about your question. Looked up some stuff and here is my 2 cents. Although there are 360 or so members on the list, a check of the top posters show that most of the posts (not all) are from a much smaller group (of the 3349 posts 2335 are from the top 15 posters). I for one seem to be one of the top posters. Make no mistake... I am a novice. I have been able to offer advise to those who I could, but I am here to learn too. Some of the individuals who contribute have full plates. They have their own trees, jobs and they also are active on other forums. So they are busy. Also a quick look shows that of the 360 or so members more than half have not posted at all. By the way... you are one of the top posters to this forum also

Re: Where is everyone???
This is true some people will talk, most will listen. I think the adage is, better to be silent and let people think that you are a fool, that to speak up and prove them to be correct. This keeps most folks from giving there openions. In my case foolish or not I cant seem to keep my mouth shut. I care for copious amounts of bonsai material and so have little time to chat, this is especially true in the spring. We have already started to dig up root prune and replant our field trees. This goes way beond what most growers will do, but we want perfect roots on all of our trees and that meens dig them up and look at them and cut them back. Lots of work!!!!!!
We can dig up root pruin and restile and replant about 100 trees a day. This is because roots are near the serface of the soil, no tap roots and the soil is an easy dig. ripsgreentree

Re: Where is everyone???
Hey thanks guys,
I figured everyone was busy. I too am starting to get busy, making up a sizeable amount of soil for this spring. Making some new pots, getting new kiln wired up. I just sit and dream of things to do in display area, making list of trees that need repotted, etc. Wow tired already. Man Rip you must be really tired. Matter of fact that is one of the things on my list, make a new grow bed this year. To sum it all up I guess I am just getting figity waiting for this season to come so I can quit dreaming and get to work .Thanks again Jay and Rip John

Re: Where is everyone???
I am one of those lurkers that don't post or say a lot. I have been somwhat involved in another site and have done some posting of trees but admit that I'm somewhat overwhelmed. Most of the people that are involved are so good that I often feel like a 1st grader discussing the Theory of Relativity with a bunch of PhD's. This board appears a little more "downhome" so I may post a tree or two for comment.
One question: if I post a tree for comments or virtuals I really can't figure out if it belongs on this list, the Gallery list, or the Virtual list. What's your suggestion? Anyway, there are just alot of us that are somewhat shy and not real verbal. I'm also the type that has gone to several conventions and never opened my mouth! I just take it all in. |

Re: Where is everyone???
Hi Denny,
If you're starting with cuttings or seedlings, you'd probably want to lift them the first year to prune back the tap root and get a good radial root system going. After that point, I would say that every other year or every third year would be about right during the developmental stage. If you lift every year you can't take advantage of the stored reserves and growth that the established root systems provide. They basically explode once established, so don't stand too close come spring! In Bonsai Today Magazine, one of the field growers would just leave the plant in place and cut under and along one side with a sharp shovel. East side one year, west side the next, or something like that. You'll get as much advice as there are people to give it, but that's how I see it. You can find some more info about field growing in the bonsaiTALK Links section under Techniques-> Developing. Regards, Matt

Re: Where is everyone???
Hi Earl,
You can post wherever and we'll sort it out if necessary. The Virtuals section was originally intended for folks with a tree that were looking for suggestions about how to improve it. The Gallery section was intended as a kind of bonsai show, but I don't like to move a message while it's still active, so I will generally let a thread peter out before I try to reorganize. General's kind of a catch-all. The junk drawer or the broom closet - take your pick. Regards, Matt
