I just got some tremendous starter material from a man named Jack Ramey in Louisiana. I purchased a 25 year old trident maple just dug from the field in February. It has a trunk base over seven inches across, great potential for the nebari, and lots of opportunity for a great tree. All this for only $450. If I had been able to swing more of them, could have gotten them cheaper. If anyone is interested, contact me for more information. (PS: I ain't selling them, just want to encourage good material.)

I've found a wholesale landscape nursery place not to far from my home. They sell tons of stock and throw out tons of stock !
I don't even ask anymore, they just give me free access to the dumped stock area, i'll sometimes ask nicely for a few containers and they always oblige. In this way i've gotten tons of great potensai, and learned how to re-habilitate weak stock ! Good deal !

That has to be the first time I have ever heard The Miniature Plant Kingdom mentioned on any bonsai forum. Always wondered why you never hear about them here. I have dealt with them before.(several years ago) and I can honestly say that I did get what I ordered. Maybe not the best material but not misrepresented either. It was pretty good growing out stock. For me at least. I had no complaints. Any one else deal with them |

By the way I forgot to mention where I get my material for bonsai.
Being a bit lucky I can hit the bonsai wholesale nurseries. Dura-Stone& Jupiter Bonsai just to name a couple. I must admit though I do get a whole lot of stuff from old Mom and Pop nurseries. I no longer go to the woods to collect material. Too old and my bones do ache so ;o( |

Ron, Miniature Plant Kingdom would be a household name if you were into "Garden Railways". The reason you probaly never heard of them much on bonsai forums is that they don't really sell bonsai. They do a smash business selling plants to all of the garden railway people. I remember back in 1983 whem LGB trains were just getting the nod for outdoors, that we were selling plants from Miniature Plant at Fresno Hobby back then.
They do sell really great growout stock as you say. Seems everyone is to busy these days to wait it out. Me included.

I feel like I'm just too old to wait it out!
Anyway, mostly I do a lot of 'nursery crawling' and I especially like the stuff from Evergreen Gardenworks. I live in a small town not near any really great bonsai nurseries, but Evergreen Gardenworks has lots of great plants that have been grown from start with bonsai in mind. I've been happy with everything I've gotten from them and their prices are reasonable too. Happy hunting! Sandi |

A lot of the places where people get bonsai material aren't bonsai places. But we hear about them ;o) Not a big deal I was just curious anyway. I still have one of their old catalogs. It is a pretty good place to go to in order to get a description of a tree. Some of their Alpine plants would make some pretty good companion plants for our bonsai displays. One thing that seems to be sadly lacking in most bonsai nurseries. But like I said I haven't ordered from them in years. Not sure what they actually carry anymore. I just see their adds on occasion in some of the trade magazines |

Been surfing the web out of boredom. Found the Miniature Plant Kingdom's web page on bonsai starter material. Just thought I would pass it along to those that might be interested.
