Question Where to Buy Plant Benches

Believe it or not, Ive googled it, searched on here, etc..

I cant seem to find a simple plant bench for my bonsai. I'm relocating my bonsai around the house and they need a bench of some sort, i'm putting them under cover because its started to rain here and when it does down here in south florida, it rains cats n dogs. Any simple guidance would be greatly appreciated. I had a piece of plywood and concrete blocks as supports ready to setup and mom says no, have to get a "nice" looking bench. Thanks for any help!

Hey Evan,

Noting that your profile says that your a highscool student I suspect that we are in a similar boat as far as budget is concerned. I think that most "Bonsai benches" that are proffessionally made are out of our price-range.

I would reccomend building one (so that you can save for college) like I plan to do (so that I can save for Grad-school). I haven't yet started researching what kind of bench to build. But I suspect that the essentials would be that it be sturdy, sealed/stained to protect it from water damage, and have proper drainage.

I think you could make an attractive basic table with a slatted or screened table-top relatively cheaply. Get a miter box and you can saw some nice angles into it for design. I'm thinking of looking into japanese architecture to get some inspiration.

Of course it might be a two person job, so I'd also invite some willing and able family member/pal to lend a hand.

Good luck & send is a pic when you get/make one!

Evan,
I'm in the process of building a greenhouse and the last thing left to build is the benches. After doing much research, I found some great benchtops made by dura-bench. They're very hard plastic and don't need much bracing if any; you will just have to build a basic 2x4 frame and maybe cross brace it for extra support. Another type of bench I've built is much more heavy duty. It consists of 4x4 treated posts for the legs, a basic treated 2x4 frame at the top, and treated deck boards for the top surface spaced about an inch apart to allow for drainage. Anyway, good luck on buying/building your benches.
All the best,
JDL

I bought garden items from Charley's Greenhouses and I know he had bench pieces and kits in his catalogue. Look him up on Google!

I'm glad my suggestion could help, but I would still recommend buying the 4' bench tops for only $12 a piece and building a basic frame. Considering the two-tiered 3' benches your looking at (plus probably a high shipping cost), you could probably build your benches for a fraction of the cost. You could use the extra money left over to by some good stock! ) Hummert.com was the other website I bought supplies from. You might check out the website and see if they sell benches.
Best of luck to you.
All the best,
JDL

Gotta go with Bisco on this one. Yowsers, those are expensive. And you could probably find them for sale, used. Nurseries go out of business just like any other, which means that there is a liquidator to handle the left-over stock and stands. For example, I saw these last year at a Wolf's nursery that was going out of business.

I made my frame out of treated 4x4's and 2x6's. Added my own misting unit and was good to go. Just materials and labor.

Cheers,
Jim

I'm a student myself, and at the moment i have a brilliant buget bench. It consists of four house bricks (the same kind as the house is made of- grey and textured) stacked two at each end. Then i have a hefty 6' long, 6" wide and 1" thich chunk of wood that sits on top. I can fit most of my shohin on here, side by side. The special thing about my bench is that as the bricks are the same as the way it is in front of, the bench looks like it is floating! It's a nich effect and cost me nothing to build, so i'm happy.
