Well,
As far as bonsai trees are concerned, Ficus are about as forgiving as they come. If you have an idea in your head of what you want your tree to look like, make an imaginary outline around the tree and anything that falls outside that outline simply cut it off. If you could post a picture here and a description of what direction you are heading I am sure you will get ample help from others. It's hard to give good advice without seeing the tree first. Hope this helped at least a little Adam |

This is something that I haven't heard before. From reading the posts on the reforming section of this forum it woujld seem like people cut just about any size branch, (even the trunk) if it suites them. I'm also knew to this and could have a misconception about things. Could somebody clear this up for us? |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME
|
The quick answer is yes.. you can cut anything.
The real question is why? We do not cut for the cutting, we cut or remove for the sake of what remains. You are trying to produce a Bonsai. This will not occur with the first trim or the second or the third. It takes time. You should have a clear picture in your mind or on paper of what the tree will be looking like down the road.. say two to five years... your pruning is to create that look. If you just prune for no reason, you will probably not get a good looking tree in the future. Jay Another question is, are you cutting to produce shape and structure or are you pruning to create ramification? You can usually do only one... shape being first.

Thanks Jay,
That clears things up pretty well. I'm still in the shaping stage with my first Potensai, (as they are called here) I hope I'm doing the right things. darkchild, I guess the we should get some pictures of our trees posted in the show and tell section and get some advice on what we should be doing w/ them I don't have my own camera but maybe i can ask around and borrow one after my exam tomorrow...Peace, |
