Update Trunk Chop (w/pics tree now Choped)

Ok here is my dilemma guys and gals. I got this japanese cork bark maple a few weeks ago and after removing a few branches I still dont like the way the final tree will end up. As you can see the tree has already started to make come nice cork bark and has a great nebari forming.

Is it to late (in the year) to do a trunk chop? On the picture below I want to do the trunk chop right below the upper formation of cork bark.

You can see the 2 branches I removed from the top here..... The only branch I would want to save would be the very low one. But I would leave the rest for suport until more branches came out

For the best chance of healing and least risk of die back, you would want to do the trunk chop before the buds have opened.

Matt

Re: When is to lateTrunk Chop?(w/pics tree 2 chop)

Thanks for the advice Matt,
Thats what I figured, but was wondering if I could do it in the growing season. Could a healthy tree hold up for a trunk chop and root pruning all in one season?

It could, but where I live (in Santa Clara, CA) it would be stressful.

Why not layer off the top of the tree and repot in the fall?

Regards,

Matt

Air layer off the top? Or what are you talking about? If you have a post about it just redirect me with a link please.

I guess your saying this would be less stressful?

Re: When is to lateTrunk Chop?(w/pics tree 2 chop)

There is info on air layering in both bonsaiTALK Links under Techniques->Propagation->Air Layering and in the ***FAQ*** around about #18. It moves as more faq items are added, unfortunately.

Cork bark Japanese Maple are pretty rare, and this seems like a good opportunity to take advantage of the 6-8 months until fall by doing a layer.

Chopping the top can lead to die back, particularly if you don't have branches on both sides of the trunk. I don't know where you are now, but our temps are in the 80's now, though a little humid. I expect you are about the same there in Florida. I think the optimal time for radical rootwork is passed.

I seem to sense that you are itching to do something with this tree, and an air layer is a perfect way to occupy your time while taking advantage of the existing roots and trunk.

Regards,

Matt
