Bonsai nare-do-well

What's up
Well some of us had a bit of rain, others had a bit of wind. All of us had no Bonsaitakl ;o(
Hopefully those that had the rain and wind are getting themselves back together and that they did not fare too badly. I was just wondering how everyone spent the last few days with no bonsai talk. With all the rain I had and then the site down I spent my time trying to find something to do. Housebound and no bonsai talk kind of "sucked" I did drink a couple of beers ;o) But soon tired of that and braved the weather to pot and initially styled a few trees. The wife said I was crazy but what the heck. It wasn't cold and I did have a poncho. Some of the trees I had to pot more than once. It was a bit windy for a while. Saturday morning it stopped raining but by the I had run out of trees. Had to slosh through the mud in the back yard and finish working on my new deck/display area. Got that all done except for display tables. Guess now that the site is back up I won't get much more done. Will be here trying to catch up on things )Last edited by Ron Martin : 20-Sep-2004 at 11:03 AM. |

Ron,
Glad you got some work done. I went down to Spartanburg on Thursday and picked up two puppies (black labs) from the Humane Society. I worked on a dog house and a fence all weekend, but I'm my kid's hero for the moment. Cold in Huntersville this morning (49* F). A little early for that, but it looks to be that way for the week (highs around 80 though). I booked a hotel room in Asheville for the Expo (I think it's one of the hotels that didn't slide off the mountain). Sounds like the mountains are having a pretty rough time of it. We got through Ivan with some wind and rain. Not too bad though. Let's see, only three more hurricanes/tropical storms in the Atlantic right now. Gee, a respite maybe? John

Word of advice from someone in the area - Interstate 40 DID slide off the mtn. At least part of it. Check your travel plans if you plan to drive thru that area using I-40 thru the mtns to Asheville. The detour up I-81 and across the new section of I-26 adds about an hour to that drive. We don't know how long it'll take 'em to fix I-40 (again
....it took months last time. Maybe it wasn't as bad a slide. One can hope. Guess I'll have to add some time - I-26 is my normal route to Asheville - have to account for all the extra traffic. |

Thanks for the advice. I'll check in early October and see if I should just take I-26. John

Clarification - when I first started my reply to John, I read "Huntsville", as in Alabama - points west and south of Asheville. Chattanooga, Nashville, etc. For them my prior advice stands.
John - I note (after I posted the 1st reply)...You're from Huntersville, NC (near Charlotte). Oops - well, a plug for the area. For you, by all means, if you do come down I-81 (I'm not sure whether there's an 'east of the mtns' route to Asheville from Charlotte area), take I-26 east to Asheville. The new section of I-26 is quite nice, very scenic. (Except sometimes in winter, when it's a bit too scenic to drive thru. ) It'll save you an hour. Well, it would have saved you an hour. Not sure what mess the detour traffic will make. ![]() |

I'll still check the status of I-40 EAST of Asheville. I will be heading west, of course, from I-77 (Statesville, NC). Thanks for the update though. John

I spent my week-end at the Montreal botanical Garden. It was the annual bonsai exposition for the Montreal society. One thinbg I didnt know was that the friday evening was not open to the public but only to thge society member. I am not one. I wanted to assist to the prize distribution for the contest and wanted to assist at the auction. When I arrive at the door, they ask me if I was a member I said no. They then told me it's only for the society member. Hmmm. I ask them if being of the Ottawa Bonsai society ( 2 hour drive ) would qualify me ? They ask the high ranking members to the society and they decide to let me in as a guest "member". Very nice.
The other days, I went to the exhibition, but also past some marvelous time in the botanical garden. This garden has the largest Chinese garden out of China in the world and also the largest Bonsai Collection out of Asia. The arboretum is just fantastic, I must have spent almost 4 hours studying tree's in the arboretum. Nice Week-end. I then come back to the internet today and Bonsaitalk was there. I did not miss any of the action while I was away. |

Well, we couldn't have had any prettier weather here in my part of Ohio over the weekend, highs in the mid 70's and low's in the upper 40's to mid 50's at night. We're getting more of the same today, and the rest of the week temps in the mid 80's and sunny. I'm taking advantage of what might be some of the last great weather by finishing off the new bonsai display/work table I built on my patio and working some on my indoor area because before long it'll be time to bring in the tropicals.
I also started planning out my visit to Brussel's bonsai for the early spring, getting an idea of the distance and laying out my choice of hotel. I'm hoping to get someone from the Dayton or Cincinnati club to go with me and split gas, but if I must go alone then that's fine too. Word has it the place has 50,000 trees or something like that so I'm planning for a day of driving down, two full days at the nursery and then a day to drive back. If anyone can tell me if I should make it three days at the nursery, please let me know.

In my area we had some of each. Lots of rain on Saturday which I figured I take advantage of so I went out to the nurseries to avoid the crowd I became the crazy guy with the umbrella digging around in the tree pots (I had to get my contest tree). On Sunday it was beautiful so, before and after my children's soccer games, I spent lots of time outside staring at my new tree ![]() I'm glad bonsaiTalk is back! No where near 50,000 trees but a lot of them. Three days at the nursery will break most banks. Good material but more expensive than most places. If one has money to burn they have the trees that will command it. |
