Whats the thickest cutting you've ever had success with?

I once sawed a branch off of a willow that was about four inches thick and it took root, also an Ash that was about three inches thick, I've sawn olives off at the base that have been at least twelve inches thick with success but I'm not sure if you'd call that a cutting.

A large cutting is a quick way to get a nice sized trunk, Whats the largest cutting you've had success with and what species, I'd like to try this with some others tree types.

Oh, do let us know. I have some 1/2 inch seiju's that need to be reduced in height and was planning on attempting cuttings with the removed tops. Also a couple of olives that need some work.

I do know that seiju will air layer very well . . . repotter has one is his yard that he has air layered several times.

The reason I just tried a cutting is because the section is about 2" thick and only 3" tall . . . we're talking sumo mame here!

cuttings

While living in Florida I had the opportunity to try some cuttings I had never tried before.

The first was an Aralia, known commonly as "Ming" or "Parsley" Aralia.
The cutting was taken from a huge landscape bush (tree) and was 4" in Diameter.

I did several of these and they all put out roots and in 4 weeks I was able to pot them in nursery pots.

The largest cutting I have had success with was also in Florida. It was a Gumbo Limbo tree 6" in Diameter. The method used was to just set it on the bare ground leaning against the building in the shade and keep damp. It put out roots at the
outer edges of the trunk in a perfect circle. When they were about six inches long I potted it up in a 5 gallon nursery pot. It had grown a nice head of foliage by 6 weeks.

This method is common for the Gumbo Limbo and are known for being fairly easy to do.

It was fun to experiment, Florida is like a big greenhouse anyway.

ficus root readily at most any size, I've seen whole trees cut down, and the pieces closest to the soil rooted if left alone, personally I've taken up to 4" inch thick cuttings which rooted in about 4-6 weeks.
