Halloween Ghost Whatcha got brewn for spring?,and a Q about cold strat.

In the fridge as far as seeds go I have a couple of acer palm. types,a couple of small leaf elm types, ornamental pear, washington red apple, some trident maples on the way,and an unknown small leaf red maple type.
In the past 2 weeks I have sewn some baobabs, pomegranite, chinese elm, orange.I plan to search around my local for more seeds this week aswell.Japanes maple has been my hot item for this fall,if my seeds spurt up I will have aquired roughly 10-15 variaties this year.Including the 3 live trees I have purchased I put my cost at around $20 and all will be ungrafted bonsai subjects.I plan to do some air layers next season, and I can actually see my little maple bonsai garden taking form before I am 30.Now I guess I need to buy a house with a yard, LOL.

I will say however that this hobby is a little like water torture, seeing as how every time I open up the fridge I am reminded "only 140 days left" or "only 65 days left".Man,I can't wait for spring to roll around again.

Can anyone tell me if seeds can be put into the freezer to break the dormancy? If so,for how long? I have heard 2 weeks will do it.If I can use the freezer in stead of the long refridge peroid whet methods work for this.I use a plastic baggie for the fridge.

seed germinating for these trees is quite strange for me ive never heard of it taking so long for a taproot to appear what got me intrested in plants originally was cannabis growing (just enough to support myself) but lets not get into that, i could germinate seeds in a mere 24 hours to 3 or 4 days and have seedlings in a week the only time it was suggested to put seeds in the fridge unless i was intrested in storing them so they could keep their vitality then you could soak them or put them in a plastic bag folded in a paper towel on top of a tv or stero somthing warm and open them daily to prevent mold this has been my way of germinating seeds but im not so sure it works well with other types of plants good luck on your seeds

edit: by the way im quite new to bonsai just researching now so im not sure if theres any faster way to start off seedlings

Aggh...Happy Halloween,Yeah your way will work for nondormancy needed seeds/plants.
In laymans terms... Cold hardy trees go dormant in the winter so the seeds need to be tricked into thinking winter has came and gone. Thus putting these types of seeds thru a simple process and then storing them in the cool for 90-180 days.Scarification and stratification(spelling?) are the terms for this process.

I also am a big fan of seeds, recently i have started growing everything from seed, not just bonsai.

Come spring i will have 4 different oak species: Q. Macrocarpa, Q. Ilex "Robustifolia" Q. Emoryi, and Q. Faginea, maybe more depending on trades towards the end of this year. Oaks have been by big passion these last few months, but i also have Acer Campestre, Betula Pendula, Castanea sativa, Prunus Spinosa, Prunus Institia, Acer Ginnala, Q. Robur, Sequoiadendron giganteum, + many more i cant think of atm, these are all for bonsai, but i have many passionflower seeds growing as well.

Next spring i will be buying hedging stock for bonsai, Carpinus Betulus, Hornbeam, so i will buy around 20 of those Cant wait

Oh yeah,I forgot to mention my Vietnamese purple globe peppers I started a couple of weeks ago. They are about 9" tall now and getting ready to flower. And Orchid aswell but I can't seem to get a bloom out of them.I am only familliar with about half of your list, but it all sounds like fun!I have gotten some of my seeds thru trade across the various bonsai forums.Seeds are cool and alot can be found for free.I just love em.I think the first I tried were Marigold back in highschool science class. When I start my Pomegranites I cut open the fruit, scoop loads of it into my mouth and drink the juice while I give them a light chewing. When they start to not taste good I spit them into a glass of water and let them set for a day or two before sewing. It is a hoot of a time.Just in case anyboby cares to know

Thanks for the spell check!

Depends on what you are wanting to work with. Tropicals or cold hardy?Give an example and someone will get you the info. I am using wild and purchased seeds.
