What plants would you use miracid on?
I just recently bought some miracid and i need to know what trees you would use this product on? I have junipers, paperbark maple, bougies, japanese maples, crepe myrtle, yaupon holly, wisteria, cotoneaster, mugo pines, jbp, birds nest spruce, chaste tree, yew, sweet olive, sugar maple, dwarf poms, weeping willow, surinam cherry, flowering qunice, some collected azalea and trident maples, and indoors i have ficus. Should i use this miracid on any of those? Right now i am using fish emulsion.

Most trees prefer a slightly acid soil but there will be some that don't. Know your trees. :-)
You would use it regularly at full strength on heathers, camelia, azaelea and rhododendron which are definite acid lovers. Conifers and acers - would benefit from a half strength dose once a month in the growing season. My little blue box of it lists about 30 plants/trees including the above for which it is suitable as well inc. cotoneaster, hawthorn, pine, spruce, dogwood and oak which are all popular bonsai species.(I appreciate that USA packaging may be different ) Apart from the definite acid lovers in para 2, as stated, I would tend to use it half strength now and then on other plants in conjunction with a GP fertilizer. Hope this helps. TimR

I've found that boxwood tend to like things slightly on the alkaline side, rather than neutral. Just my 0.02$USD.

It is to be noted that miracid is not an acidifying fertilizer. It is a fertilizer for acidic soils which many plants do best in.

so if my plants are in basic bonsai soil would miracid work to help acidify the soil enough for these plants? If i gave it to them once a week or something like that or Once a month? I have never used this stuff before but have read about it here and just want to do whats best for my trees.

I doubt that Miracid will acidify the soil. You would need something like iron sulphate to do that and you would have to be careful with it. As bwaynef said, Miracid is a fertilizer for acidic situations. However, it wont hurt to use it on your bonsai and it may be beneficial because it has some micronutrients in it. I'm just curious - Do you have a particular plant that requires an acidic soil? When I looked at your list of trees, they all seemed to be of the type that would do well in general bonsai soil. |

sweet or sour
I do not know what the N source is in Miracid. Ammonium sulfate is a N source and a good source of sulfur when it is needed. The advantage or disadvantage is that it is the most acidifying form of N fertilizer. It requires approx. 3 times as much lime (sweet or alkaline) to neutralize the same amount of acidity as formed by other common N carriers.
