What Is The Oldest Bonsai You Have Seen And Where?

Just wondering I thought that when I saw a 150 year old tree on the net it was OLD! and it is! but then I saw junipers that were 200, 250,300,350,400, and even 450 years old on a website! I am not sure if they are really that old it is a website called www.j-bonsai.com and when I clicked the prestock link They showed up. this sparked an Idea to see who has seen or even owns the oldest tree on the forums maybe?

Btw these are not actually pre bonsai specimen they are BEAUTIFUL TREES! with 90cm trunks

Hey B.Adair,

Get up, stand up...

Amazing age to these old juinipers, huh? there are two different ages that we can amaze at. One is actual living age of trees, the other is is the time a tree has been in training as a bonsai.

The junipers that we collect locally are about a hundred years per inch of girth. The rings are so smal that you need a lens of some sort to count.

They just sit there for decades I guess and barely survive. Then a good couple of years with lots of rain comes along and perks them up for a decade or so. Just amazing stuff.

Then think about some of the Imperial collection of the Japanese royalty that has been in constant bonsai cultivation for over three centuries. Also amazing and mind boggling.

Just got back from a two thousand mile motorcycle trip from Northern California to British Columbia where on the way, I stopped by the Elandan Gardens for the first time in Washington. They have a beautiful collection of trees on display, including some pines and junipers over 800 years old. They were amazing to behold. Made my collection look like a bunch of well-potted seedlings!

I think Dan Robinson estimates the ages of trees the same way they estimated the ages of patriarchs in the book of Genesis.

Best regards,
Carl
