Before I started bonsai I used to collect all kinds of plants and trees and grow them in pots.
Even when I was a kid, I used to do that with my father.

So, I would probably just grow plants as a hobby, and if there was no bonsai, eventually I would have invented it

I would play a lot more golf on the weekends and in the warmer months I would play after work.

OK, first, I'd probably get back into industrial-strength vegetable gardening, which I have largely given over to my wife in order to do bonsai. Second, I'd probably do alot more fishing, including taking up fly-fishing. Maybe fly-tying. Thirdly, more hiking. Fourthly, I'd probably take up small game hunting, primarily squirrel hunting. Fifthly, I'd probably put more effort into our weekly Dungeons and Dragons game.

And, yes, I've kept aquariums most of my life but I don't think I'd go back into that rather than the aforementioned activities.

Sad to say, I guess I might as well confess my TV watching would likely increase!

The one major drawback to bonsai is their need for constant care. This makes extended travel difficult. I used to do multiweek trips to go river running, diving, hiking, camping, etc. I still take shorter trips, but find it difficult to leave my trees in the care of anyone else for an extended period of time. Also, a large part of the cash I spent on travel now goes into my new passion.

BTW,,,I also have a small freshwater tank.

Wow! A lot of talented people out there!

Years ago when wilder I was into building custom choppers ( almost 30 years before it was cool to watch them on Discovery channel :>) I did it all, the painting, molding, wiring, etc.

I collected guns and shot rifle/pistol target and skeet for the better part of my life ( my late father-in-law was a state skeet champ and taught me to shoot skeet when I was dating his daughter at 1 .
Made custom "Arkansas toothpick" knives and did scrimshaw handles on them ( and other stuff), built muzzle loaders and powder horns w/ scrimshaw . ( I wanted to do this for a job but no one will pay for your time....kinda like great pottery!)

My wife and I used to shoot bows and shoot in archery club contests.

Got started in bonsai in 1978.

I've just recently gotten interested in pistol shooting again.

oh!
and I have a koi pond and a 70 gal. freshwater tank in my family room.

Dale

P.S. Now.....If I just had all that money back!!!....

I could buy a new Harley and start all over again! :>) :>)

I would take up martial arts again. I would also shoot in competition more. My main focus would be long-range rifle shooting (1000 yards and more). I have a State Arms .50 caliber that I would love to shoot a LOT more. About $3 every time it goes boom. And that's me hand-loading. Factory stuff is close to $5 a pop.

I have to say I'm glad that bonsai "bit" me though. It keeps me in close proximity to my kids so I can drop the shears and throw the ball/frisbee etc. from time to time.

I think the alpines and orchids would fill the gardening gap if for some reason I had to go Bonsai free. Music and woodworking would probably fill the art gap. I'd also continue collecting suiseki and vinyl LPs.
Probably no guns or aquariums though...
