Oh my...... Let me say first, that most hobbies were to keep from doing house work....and still are... Custom leather tooling for many years. (a good pre cursor to wood carving) Bonsai came early and co existed with many hobbies over the years. Raising exotic birds, large aquariums for many years, breeding and showing English Bulldogs, stained glass and now wood carving. Still plan on some stained glass work yet, but mostly bonsai and wood carving and last of all, house work.

It's funny that many "bonsai people" have had aquarium's. And in my experience most of the aquariums have been salt, reef or otherwise. I too would probably invest a lot more into my reef tank if it weren't for my trees. If I didn't have either hobby I would have probably continued my fossil and rock collection.

Wow that is pretty amazing that so many people also keep aquariums. I myself have had a couple freshwater aquariums in the past and will soon take the plunge into mini reefs. I've already done almost a years worth of reading and research so that i'm prepared when i finally get my own house. If you think about it there are many similarities between bonsai and aquarium keeping....although not as artistic i'm sure.

I would devote more time to my other activities. Rhododendron society, Holly society, azalea society, Hosta society, President of the southeast chapter of the American Rock Garden Society, Cacti and succulents, Drawing, Reading, and raising my two boys
Other than that I probably wouldn't do anything

Regards,
Dave

Hey, this is a really great thread.

My other hobby other than bonsai is aquaria, like many other bonsai enthusiasts apparently! I thought that was a really neat thing to find out.

I'm 31 and I've been keeping fish since I was 10, so I've been in the aquatic hobby as long as some of you have been in the bonsai hobby (only two years in bonsai for me so far). Professionally, part of my job deals with about 3 million dollars in tropical fish and exotics over a region of several states.

At home I currently have a small salt water reef tank set up, but honestly I've been considering taking a break from fish for a while and going even more toward my bonsai. That VHO flourescent lighting I have in the hood I built over my aquarium is looking very tempting for my indoor bonsai growing area for putting my tropicals in when the snow comes, hahaha.

Every couple years I take about a year break from having an aquarium set up at home, but now that I have bonsai as new lifestyle/addiction/obsession I may take a longer break from fish.

I gave up salt water fishkeeping after I contemplated spending $5,000 on a new mini-reef tank. I knew I was in trouble when a 50 gallon tank wasn't big enough for what I wanted to do.

I switched to bonsai over a decade ago and have found it much more rewarding than aquariums--and you get a winter break from it every year--of course that's if you don't have tropical species.
